Building Bridges - Enterprise Learning in the Middle Years

Authentic Learning

Atelier found that 'The contribution of Building Bridges to creating authentic learning environments for many students was acknowledged across the Evaluation evidence. Many principals and teachers identified in the project a significant capacity to better engage students as learners and to better connect them to school and to the community'.

In support of this, Atelier noted that 'The student-based evidence suggests that many were strongly engaged by and in the authentic learning' that Building Bridges promoted. They often made observations about their 'Building Bridges learning' being 'more real' than their learning experiences generally. Many demonstrated a genuine sense of pride in their accomplishments and felt that they had made important contributions to both school and community. Pedagogies employed by their teachers had more actively engaged them as learners, and made learning more consequential through application in 'the real world''.
